Matau Maori Hook

Historically the Maori are fishermen. Their main food source was the sea so a high quality fish hook was a very important and valuable item to have. The Maori wear them around their necks as a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority, and respect for the sea and the life that's in it. They also believe that wearing the hook around their necks provides good luck and safety while journeying in or over the water.
